The upholstery material artificial leather has become increasingly popular again in recent years. Here are some advantages that speak in favor of artificial leather:
- Imitation leather is generally much cheaper than genuine leather.
- It is easier to process and can be produced as a continuous material.
- Depending on the quality of the materials used in its manufacture, the durability of artificial leather can almost match that of genuine leather.
- Synthetic leather is easy to care for and less susceptible to stains than real leather.
In addition, covers are usually easier to change. - Synthetic leather is popular with vegetarians and vegans. However, caution is advised here: Just because no animal skin has been used, this does not fundamentally rule out the use of other animal components. In case of doubt, only explicit labeling as “vegan” can provide information about the materials used.
- If the seat covers are exposed to wind and weather, imitation leather has a clear advantage. Imitation leather is the better alternative for motorcycle seats, jet skis or outdoor upholstery because it is much less sensitive to the weather.
- For car seats, however, real leather has the advantage. Seat surfaces and armrests covered with artificial leather quickly show the typical cracks that can make the interior look unsightly at an early stage.
- This is why many manufacturers of leather seats and car manufacturers nowadays use genuine leather for the contact sides of the seats, while the rest is made of artificial leather.
- Unfortunately, advice on the choice of material is not always the best. Since there is no obvious difference between genuine leather and imitation leather visible to the naked eye, many car owners believe they have genuine leather, even though part of the upholstery is made of imitation leather.
