We are proud to admit that we are experts in the field of leather care. For 40 years, we have dedicated ourselves to the research, development and production of cleaning and care products specifically for furniture leather. We have our own laboratory in which we test the care properties of all new leather collections from manufacturers. We regularly obtain information about innovations on the leather market directly from leading German tanneries. And that's why we claim to really know our way around leather and its care requirements.
Every day, we advise many consumers who come to us with questions about cleaning, stain removal and leather care. And we often hear “insider tips”, which have not led to the desired result, but have usually made the problem worse.
We would therefore like to take this opportunity to speak frankly about so-called home remedies and secret recipes for removing stains and caring for leather.
Are home remedies suitable for leather care?
Nivea cream, buttermilk, olive oil?
We test the most common household remedies
Nivea cream?
The use of Nivea Creme as leather furniture care is not recommended due to modern types of leather and their coating.
The “greasy film” remains on the surface, can damage the leather and, in the worst case, become rancid. It is advisable to use special leather care products to avoid negative effects.
.
Olive oil
Pure care with cooking oil oversaturates the leather, it cannot absorb it.
A conditioner always needs moisture to be absorbed into the leather. Pure oil only leaves a shiny to greasy film on the leather.
Buttermilk for leather care?
Yes, some housewives' forums swear by buttermilk or a mixture of defatted milk and water. This is perhaps even understandable, as the combination of water and fat nourishes the leather.
If you like the smell of rancid buttermilk, you can follow this advice. But we don't recommend it, because the milk goes bad after a few days and the leather smells rancid.
Beeswax
As with cooking oil, the pure care of beeswax oversaturates and smears leather. The wax clogs the pores of the leather, so the leather can no longer “breathe”. Beeswax also polishes the leather, making it shiny and very smooth.
If beeswax is applied repeatedly, the layer formation can even cause the leather to turn gray and lose its natural, fresh appearance.
